Hey Charleston! Hurricane season is here, and it’s time to prep. Don’t wait until the last minute. Here’s a quick guide to help you get ready and stay safe.

Before the Hurricane

1. Create an Emergency Plan:

- Know your evacuation routes and nearby shelters.
- Pick a meeting spot for your family.
- Plan for your pets—they need a safe place too!

2. Prepare an Emergency Kit:

- Stock up on non-perishable food and water for at least 3 days.
- Pack medications and medical supplies.
- Have flashlights, batteries, and a battery-operated radio ready.
- Keep important documents (ID, insurance papers) in a waterproof container.
- Carry some cash; ATMs and card machines might not work.

3. Secure Your Home:

- Put up storm shutters or board up windows.
- Bring in or secure outdoor items (furniture, decorations, etc.).
- Trim trees and shrubs to minimize debris.
- Reinforce your garage doors.

4. Check Insurance Coverage:

- Make sure you have adequate homeowners, flood, and windstorm insurance.
- Document and photograph your home’s interior and exterior for potential claims.

5. Stay Informed:

- Sign up for local emergency alerts and monitor the National Hurricane Center for updates.
- Have a NOAA weather radio on hand.

During the Hurricane

1. Follow Evacuation Orders:

- If local authorities issue an evacuation order, leave immediately.
- Stick to designated evacuation routes and avoid shortcuts.

2. Stay Indoors and Safe:

- Keep away from windows and glass doors.
- Shelter in a small, interior, windowless room or hallway on the lowest level.
- Use your phone sparingly to save battery life.

3. Stay Informed:

- Keep listening to updates from local officials via radio or mobile alerts.

After the Hurricane

1. Wait for Official All-Clear:

- Return home only when local authorities say it’s safe.

2. Assess Damage Safely:

- Watch out for downed power lines and structural damage.
- Wear protective clothing and sturdy shoes.

3. Document and Report:

- Take photos of any damage for insurance claims.
- Contact your insurance company to report the damage ASAP.

4. Avoid Flood Waters:

- Don’t drive or walk through flood waters—they can be contaminated or hide dangers.

5. Clean Up Safely:

- Use proper safety gear (gloves, masks) when cleaning debris.
- Follow local guidance on debris disposal.

Being prepared can make a huge difference. Stay safe, Charleston!
